Upper School Students Win Awards at Model United Nations Conference

The Crossroads Model United Nations Club kicked off their season competing at the BruinMUN Conference at UCLA in November. Over two intensive days, 19 Crossroads students utilized their skills in diplomacy, public speaking and creative thinking to discuss complex global challenges. They debated topics ranging from creating a new Asian regional currency pegged to the Chinese yuan to mitigating child labor abuses in developing economies. Two delegates even collaborated to establish trade between Italy and the Americas half a century earlier than historically recorded!

 

Seniors Ashley Stutsman and Christine Kivi won a research award in their dual delegation committee. Mia Orengo, also a senior, received an honorable mention for her work on the crisis committee. 

“I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a great experience,” said Ashley. “My knowledge of finance was limited before the conference, but I learned a lot about global monetary policy while preparing. I enjoyed working with the other delegates and discussing how the ideas that came up in committee may have changed the historical outcome.”
